Netflix Blonde Release Date, Cast, Trailer and More

Marilyn Monroe is, beyond the shadow of a doubt, one of the greatest, most popular, and most recognizable icons in popular culture as we know it. Born and having spent her formative years in orphanages and foster homes, she had a tough life growing up. She worked in a factory during the war, and post-war, she had kicked her career off after meeting a photographer.

Starting as a pin-up model, she made her foray into films with several short-lived contracts, cemented herself as a force to be reckoned with, and gained a meteoric increase in popularity. She, unfortunately, passed away in 1962, but her legacy lives on. One such testament to her legacy is the novel Blonde, published in 2000. Written by Joyce Oates, it chronicles the inner life of Monroe.

In the author’s words, the book is a work of fiction and should not be considered a biography. The novel was adapted into a miniseries in 2001, but it is receiving its first full-scale cinematic adaptation in 2022 on Netflix.

Let us see what we know of the movie.

The film was in development hell for the better part of a decade from 2010, and only in 2019 did it begin production. The film is being produced by Brad Pitt and his partners, who run a production company. Shooting commenced in Los Angeles in August 2019. Netflix has the right to release the Blonde movie, and as per schedule, it should be released in 2022.

Blonde Cast

Seeing how this is a fictional biopic, the casting must be accurate. And it looks like the filmmakers have delivered on that front. Ana de Armas is a Cuban/Spanish actress, and thus, the last person you would think to be cast as Monroe; however, looking at the stills and videos which have surfaced online, it seems the casting director nailed it. The characters in the movie are a blend of both real and fictionalised characters.

The cast for the real characters is as follows:

  • Ana De Armas as Marilyn Monroe
  • Adrien Brody as Arthur Miller
  • Bobby Cannavale as Joe DiMaggio
  • Julianne Nicholson as Gladys Pearl Baker
  • Caspar Phillipson as John F. Kennedy
  • Toby Huss as Allan Snyder
  • David Warshovsky as Darryl Zanuck
  • Evan Williams as Edward G. Robinson Jr.
  • Xavier Samuel as Charlie Chaplin
  • Michael Masini as Tony Curtis
  • Luke Whoriskey as James Dean

Blonde Storyline

Because it is a fictionalised biopic, it will not be an accurate retelling of Monroe’s life. Instead, it is a made-up story showing her rise to stardom, interactions with multiple Hollywood celebrities, and her much-talked-about affair with JFK.

In addition, there is the conspiracy that the Kennedy brothers (Robert and John) were involved in assassinating Marilyn. However, the novel will explore only the relationship she had with John, the president at that time.

Blonde Trailer

We do not have a trailer yet, despite filming having commenced in 2019. But this is par for the course, for Netflix. They tend to release the trailers close to the release date, and considering this very well will be up for the Oscars in 2023, it is understandable why Netflix is keeping it all under wraps.

There has been interesting from the Cannes Film Festival to screen the movie there first. Consequently, we can expect the movie to hit the festival circuits first and then the broader release.

As the festival is ceremonially held in May, we can expect a trailer to drop in May, if not April.

Blonde Premiere Date

The movie will feature on the festival circuit, notably at Cannes. Seeing that that is normally a sign that the studio wishes for the movie to be sent for Oscar consideration, we expect the public release to be a few months after the festival circuit has finished.

A late-year release after September would not be surprising, as by then, the studio would have gauged the critical response and would be feeling more confident in releasing it to the public.

The Conclusion

Andrew Dominik, the director of this movie, is a great director, with films such as The Assassination of Jesse James and series like Mindhunter under his belt. In addition, Ana de Armas has proven herself to be a great actress, with works such as Blade Runner 2049 and the latest James Bond movie, No Time to Die, under her belt.

There is no reason not to expect Blonde to be one of the year’s best movies, and I cannot wait for it to release.

  1. There have been so many Marilyn Monroe biopics. This fictionalized bio is just so unnecessary. Why trash the memory of an icon?

  2. I’m anxious to see “Blonde” I truly believe Marilyn was underestimated as the sensitive young girl she was growing up. I really hope they showed her innocent side as the shy quiet person she was in her younger years prior to the start of her career.
