The fantasy genre went through a renaissance in the early 2000s, with the Lord of the Rings trilogy arguably one of the greatest fantasy series of all time. That set the stage and standard for other fantasy works. Many tried, but none came close to it, not even its prequel series, The Hobbit trilogy.
Moreover, we can point to Game of Thrones as equivalent in the TV and web series realm. Still, even that lost its sheen after the sixth season, which led to two forgettable seasons. And now, it has been almost forgotten by the majority of the populace.
There is The Witcher too, but it is too soon to tell whether it will reach the same iconic status as Game of Thrones or the Lord of the Rings, but early signs look promising.
Another show that does look promising is Shadow and Bone, an adaptation of the eponymous trilogy, and another duology called Six of Crows, both authored by Leigh Bardugo. Eric Heisserer has adapted the series.
That name should ring a few bells, as he is an Oscar-nominated screenwriter whose script for the 2016 film Arrival earned him that nomination.
Here is what we know of the web series so far:
Shadow and Bone Season 2 Release Date
The first season premiered on the 23rd of April 2021, and after seeing the mostly positive reception, Netflix decided to renew the series for the second season in June of the same year.
So the rumor mill was quiet for quite some time, but we received an update on the 12th of January that they have begun production on the shadow and bone season 2. So we can expect it to release sometime in the latter half of this year, say, around September to November.

Shadow and Bone Season 2 Trailer
As production for the second season has just commenced a few weeks back, it would be unrealistic to expect a trailer for the new season anytime soon. All we can get now are production stills, behind the scene images, and unconfirmed rumors.
However, as the second season would drop on Netflix around September and November, we can expect to see a trailer drop sometime in July or August.
Shadow and Bone Season 2 Storyline
Like all good fantasy shows, Shadow and Bone are set in a dense and meticulously constructed fictional universe called Grisha, and it deals with multiple realms and sects of people.
The main storyline revolves around one of the realms, as it grapples with the possibility of civil war. There is magic and mayhem galore, as the people in this universe possess various magical skills, some for good and some for evil.
There are monsters, too, as is the standard on any excellent fantasy show.
The main character possesses a unique set of skills that make her stand out, and the show follows her life. These skills make her a prime target for the forces of good, to help better the world they live in, and the details of evil to help expand their darkness and ruin the lives of the people who live there.
In the second season, we can expect to see her make tough choices, between good and evil, between her power and her love, and for her to face the big battle that is to come.
Shadow and Bone Season 2 Premiere Date
As of the writing of this article, there is no official statement from Netflix, but seeing as how production is still ongoing, we can expect the new season to drop towards the end of the year, between September and November.
Keep your eyes peeled on the Netflix release schedule and their social media pages for more information.
As one of Netflix’s newer fantasy additions, this seems to be a good show. However, as an iconic fantasy series, only time will tell whether it stands up to The Witcher, Game of Thrones, or even Lord of the Rings.
